What a Paint Thickness Gauge Reveals That Your Eyes Can't

March 12, 2026 · 5 min read · JAG Auto Inspections

Of all the tools a professional vehicle inspector carries, the paint thickness gauge is arguably the most powerful. It is also the one that surprises buyers the most when they see it in action.

What Is a Paint Thickness Gauge?

A paint thickness gauge is a handheld electronic device that measures the depth of paint on a vehicle's metal panels. It works using electromagnetic induction — reading the distance between the sensor tip and the bare metal beneath the paint layers.

What Does Factory Paint Look Like?

Every vehicle that leaves an assembly line has paint applied in a controlled, consistent process. The result is a predictable paint thickness across all factory panels — typically between 90 and 200 microns. The specific numbers vary but the consistency does not. Factory panels on the same vehicle read within a very close range of each other.

What Does a Repainted Panel Look Like?

When a panel is damaged and repaired at a body shop, body filler reshapes the metal, then primer, paint, and clear coat are applied. The result is a paint thickness reading that is significantly higher than factory — often two to three times higher in areas where filler was used. Even a panel simply repainted without filler reads differently because the refinishing process adds additional material.

What Does This Tell a Buyer?

A systematic paint thickness reading across all panels creates a map of the vehicle's collision history. Panels at factory spec are original and undamaged. Panels that read significantly higher have been repaired and refinished. This information is completely invisible to the naked eye. A freshly detailed car with a perfect-looking paint job can have significant prior damage that a gauge identifies in seconds.

We have inspected vehicles with clean Carfax reports and showroom-quality appearances that showed clear evidence of prior collision repair on multiple panels. Buyers who skipped the inspection would never have known.
