Step 1 — Pull a Vehicle History Report First
Before spending any time or money, pull a Carfax or AutoCheck report. This screens out the most obvious problems — salvage titles, flood damage, major reported accidents — for $25 to $40.
Step 2 — Video Call With the Seller
Ask the seller to do a live video walkthrough. Watch how they respond. A seller with nothing to hide is happy to do this. During the call ask them to start the car on camera, open the hood, and walk around all four corners.
Step 3 — Book a Local Inspector
This is the most important step most remote buyers skip. A local pre-purchase inspector goes to the vehicle in person, performs a full physical inspection, and sends you a complete photo and video report. Step 4 — Negotiate Based on Findings
A good inspection report almost always gives you negotiating leverage. Findings that are real but not deal-breaking — worn brakes, aging tires, a minor oil leak — are entirely reasonable grounds for a price reduction.
Step 5 — Arrange Transport or Fly In
